Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a Nomination Contest?

When there is no federal Liberal candidate for election, the Liberal party calls a Nomination Contest. Any person in the riding is able to apply to be a candidate. When the party calls the Nomination vote, every member of the Liberal Party who lives in the riding is able to vote for the candidate of their choice. The person who receives the most Liberal member votes becomes the candidate and runs for the party in the next election.

  • Why is there a Nomination Contest?

In our riding of Beaches-East York, our current MP, Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, has decided he will not run again in the next election. So the Liberal party must call a Nomination Meeting to choose our next candidate for the riding.

  • When is the Nomination Vote?

    Nobody knows.

It is up to the Liberal party to set the schedule for a Nomination contest. Once it is decided, it will be announced by email to all Liberal party members in the riding.

Meanwhile, Summer Nudel and others are working to sign up Liberals to vote when the Nomination Meeting is called.

  • Can I Vote at the Nomination Meeting?

Yes, as long as your are registered. The primary requirements to become a member of the Liberal Party of Canada and to be able to vote at the Nomination Meeting are:

    1. You must live in Beaches-East York and be able to show some proof of residency (driver’s license, citizenship card, bank or cable bill or something that shows you live where you say).

    2. You have to be 14 years of age or older.

The Liberal party believes that anyone who wants to be a part of the Nomination decision should be able to have their say.
